just time passing...

So what do I do when I have a big deadline to meet tomorrow and limited time to finsih? That's right...go on quizfarm.com to waste precious time that I do not have in the first place. Ahh, it's like highschool all over again...I need to get a hold of a discipline potion and kick this bad habit to the curb. In the meantime, apparently my Harry Potter Alter-Ego is...

You scored as Hermione Granger. You're one intelligent witch, but you have a hard time believing it and require constant reassurance. You are a very supportive friend who would do anything and everything to help her friends out.

unscripted

there are so many things i want to say...that i wish i could say... but i can't get them out. one would think that it would be easiest to talk to those that you love and yet the risk of saying what is on your mind and the fear of unknown reactions hang heavy on my heart. perhaps sometimes the truth is best left untold.

soul meets body

An excerpt from my current song fix that really hits home...

Soul Meets Body - Death Cab for Cutie

i want to live where soul meets body
and let the sun wrap its arms around me
and bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
and feel, feel what its like to be new...

cause in my head, there's a greyhound station
where i send my thoughts to far off destinations
so they may have a chance of finding a place
where they're far more suited than here

Lions, Zebras, and Hippos...oh my!

No tigers or bears this time round at the Metro Toronto Zoo, but plenty of zebras, warthogs, monkeys, hippos, komodo dragons, and giraffes to name but a few of the many animals that Steph & I saw today. It was the perfect day to spend outdoors (sunny and warm) and though there were definite moments of "pee-ew"ing while we passed by certain pavilions/animals, it was great to be outside and not cooped up. Highlights of the day include free admission (woo-hoo!), being within 2 feet of a hippo (and taking too many pictures) when he decided to take a leak followed by a swinging version of no.2 (tail swishing about and dung flying in the air - more gross than cool, but au natural all the same - luckily we ran from the scene before things got ugly and escaped without getting hit - I know....too much information), dropping my half-finished ice cream drumstick during a typical "Liz: super klutz" moment, and high-tailing it from the Canadian Pavilion when we realized that the Education Center was about to close and we still had to pick up information brochures for Steph's classroom (we made it just in time which is pretty impressive considering we were on the opposite side of the zoo when we noticed what time it was).

Fall line-up

cousin summit '05:
Image hosted by Photobucket.com Instead of waiting for the annual Christmas dinner to get together, we decided to hold a meeting sans parents before the onset of another school year. Highlights of the night included stuffing our faces with 1 lb. of steak/chicken fajitas Texas Lone Star Grill style, a rancid smell that only Lydia and I seemed to notice (and that I nearly gagged on), circling round the parking lot trying to find the way out, and teaching/playing "golf" - the card game I learned in Italy - only to be beaten by my students (I think I taught them a little too well)....

followed by a whopping 1.5 hrs. of sleep during the night of pure chaos when all the junk that had accumulated in my room since childhood had to be shovelled into boxes and transported downstairs to make way for the new carpet to be installed (think "Trading Spaces" minus all the extra help). What a nightmare! Then a quick shower and 407 drive to the airport and the next thing I knew I was back in....

Boston. A place I used to call home. It's strange when you spend so much time in a city and then one day it is time for you to move on. It never leaves you though. It's always there - in the back of your mind, along with all the memories of people and places that you associate with it...

Back for 2 weddings during the Labor Day weekend, it was a rushed trip that left little time to dawdle. There was ice cream at J.P. Licks and brunch at Johnny D's in Davis Square, dinner at John Harvard's followed by coffee at 169 in Central Square, dinner-breakfast at Zaftigs, mini-golf/batting cages in Saugus, a BCEC Branch reunion, lunch in chinatown, shopping in downtown crossing, brunch and cookies in Inman Square, breakfast in Harvard Square and many late-night talks in addition to the 2 weddings and receptions. It was tiring, and by the end of the weekend I was exhausted, but it was really great seeing everyone again and going back
..."home" again...

5 days after returning from Boston, I was back on a plane heading westward to...

edmonton:
After what seemed like the longest 4-hr flight (contributing factors include a flight delay, a guy next to me that elbowed me in his sleep, a woman behind me that constantly kicked my chair, a baby across the aisle that insisted on crying every 20 mins. during the entire flight, a faulty a/v system on the plane that did not allow for a movie to be shown or music to come through the headsets, turbulence, and lack of snacks - it now costs $2 for a pack of cashews! When did this happen?), I arrived in Edmonton to be greeted by vast flat land as far as the eye could see. 30 mins. later I was in "downtown" Edmonton and excited to discover this new place, I dropped off my suitcase, grabbed my camera, and headed for the streets. Lo and behold, I felt like I was walking in a ghost town. Granted, I was walking around on a Sunday night, but even still, almost all restaurants and stores were closed and the only people to be found on the streets were those waiting for the bus. In addition, I was freezing like a popsicle! I mean, here it is, the middle of September, and it's a whopping 7 degrees celsius. People were sporting winter coats and tuques! Simply ridiculous.

Here are some snapshots I took on Sunday:

The following day was my first day as a JOC composition clinician. Though I was initially a little scared (gotta love that internal pressure and paranoia that is in my genes), things got better as I got the hang of things, and by the end I felt much more at ease. Being there also brought back a lot of good memories from my younger days - being involved in the JOC program, recording in the studio, traveling for concerts, and meeting all sorts of talented musicians from all over the world.

Summer Recall

Summer. My favorite season and the one that always seems to fly by. This summer was probably one of the most momentous if not busiest seasons I've experienced in a while and that combined with the well-known fact that I am terrible at updating my blog, bring me to today when I will blog about all my summer adventures...

I don't think words will ever be able to describe how beautiful and amazing this country is. To walk the streets of Ancient Rome...to see the ruins, paintings, statues, and frescoes right in front of your eyes...to eat risotto and drink in all the sights and sounds that make up this country is an experience that I will never forget. I hope to someday go back and relive this dream all over again...

Bruno:

August 2, 2005 - the arrival of Brunopolis Blackaby III, affectionately known as "Bruno". Though it wasn't a planned adoption, I'm glad that I made the choice to sign the papers because as much as he needed me, I needed him. Taking care of him and providing for him is a lot more expensive then I had anticipated, especially with the rise of gasoline prices and insurance rates (not to mention the car payments themselves), but I look forward to the many road trips ahead and my feet thank him in advance.

Coldplay:

It was a last minute miracle to get the concert ticket and despite having to deal with an aisle hogger and his scalping sidekick, I had a great time. These British blokes definitely have some serious talent and I hope they stick it out for a while. Gwyneth, you are one lucky lady. Kathy, Wendy, and Janice - I have dibs on the drummer!

Inspired by the show, it was time for me to get rid of my pack-rat collections and say goodbye to highschool once and for all (In-Style, Seventeen, YM, J.Crew, Biology/English/Chemistry/Math Notes...so long).

Happy Birthday shout-outs to the big birthday girl and boy: Danielle and Edward. Seems like only yesterday Danielle was a little baby. Man, I feel so old. Other highlights of the day include re-visiting Mulan (I forgot how much I love that movie), sneezing rice, and pineapple jello.

Engagement Party #1:
Image hosted by Photobucket.comImage hosted by Photobucket.comImage hosted by Photobucket.com

My first official Jack&Jill/Engagement Party and the most fun to shop for (who would have known that Cayne's was such a hidden gem! I think Naomi and I had a little too much fun running up and down the aisles before heading over to meet "Mother", "Father", and "Sister" at the Toyota buffet...From Judaica cookie cutters to animated egg slicers, this store has it all). Wrapping everything up was a bit of a challenge, but with the help of mom and Sharon we pulled it together and created "Bob" - the blue boxed wonder.
